Pound for Pound: Heavyweights (206 - 265lb.)
This is the first in a series of articles on
pound-for-pound rankings. First we’ll review each weight division and discuss the
current #1 in the respective division and how he compares to the other fighters
currently ranked. Then we’ll stack the top fighter in each division against the
other number ones. For simplicity’s sake we’ll use the MMAWeekly ratings.
Heavyweight
#1 Fedor Emelianenko (28-1-0) 1NC
Win streak: 25
Record against current MMAWEEKLY top ten: 4-0-0 and 1NC.
Fedor Emelianenko was once universally hailed as the
pound-for-pound champ but a slow 2006 and 2007 left room for others to lay
claim to the pound-for-pound title. After his recent victory over Tim Sylvia
(#6), the Russian sambo master is poised to reassert his claim to being the
greatest fighter in the world with potential matches with top tier talent in
the near future.
Fedor has beaten current UFC heavyweight champ Antonio
Rodrigo Nogueira (#2) twice by unanimous decision; a third bout between the two
was declared a no contest after an accidental cut.
