UFC 113 Preview: Slugfest Potential High PDF Print E-mail

UFC 113 (May 8, 2010) is a strike-heavy card, one with several matches that could easily become slugfests.

Lyoto Machida vs. Shogun Rua.
This is a rematch of a controversial fight wherein the judges gave the win to Machida for reasons that remain a mystery. Shogun looked like he was in fine form and seemed to have solved to enigma of Machida Karate, employing a very aggressive Muay Thai with ease. Of course, maybe that was just an off day for the normally awesome Machida. That’s what rematches are for, duh. Besides, I doubt either fighter wants it to go the judges this time around.

Josh Kosheck vs. Paul Daley.

This fight could be great or a dreadful bore, depending on where Kosheck decides to take the fight. If Daley is allowed to stand on his feet, Kosheck could find himself cuckoo for coco puffs if Daley lands his right even once. If Kosheck takes Daley down, we could be in for a lengthy lay and pray while Kosheck grinds out the win. Of course that assumes that Daley can be taken down. Maybe he’s been working on his takedown defense. As the winner gets to take on Georges St. Pierre for the title - let’s hope that Daley has been doing exactly that - he’ll need it if he hopes to fight St. Pierre.

Alan Belcher vs. Patrick Cote
Both fighters prefer to stand and let their fists and shins do the talking, so whatever happens, this fight should be exciting. This is Cote’s first fight since his October 2008 fight against Anderson Silva; he’s been sidelined with an injury ever since. He’s fighting in front of his home town but people who are just coming off a long recuperation tend not to have their cardio where it should be. Throw in Belcher’s ground game - he’s won five fights by submission but one of those was due to strikes, so let’s just say four -- and that should give the Johnny Cash fan the advantage. Yeah, that warped figure on Belcher’s left arm is supposed to be The Man in Black. Either Belcher hired the worst tattoo artist ever to ink that or his body has transformed tremendously since he decide to rep Cash.

Jeremy Stephens  vs. Sam Stout
Jeremy Stephens is a journeyman who can’t handle elite fighters and Sam Stout is a journeyman who has shown he can hang with the best, boasting wins over Spenser Fisher, Joe Lauzon, and Matt Wiman.  Expect Stout, a Canadian, to put another K.O. notch on his belt.

Kimbo Slice vs. Matt Mitrione.
Internet street fighter Kimbo Slice is matched up against former NFL defensive lineman Matt Mitrione, both of whom appeared on TUF 10. Kimbo was thrown to Roy Nelson in the first round, and was predictably vanquished, but was a notable presence throughout the series nonetheless. Using Kimbo to plug UFC 112 during the televised portion of the recent WEC fights showed how impressed UFC management is with Kimbo‘s appeal. Matt won his first round but was caught in a guillotine by in the quarter finals and - in his own words - “tapped like a bitch.” Hopefully, they stay on their feet and just swing until the other guy drops.
